John deVries – Yondan: My reflections on grading to Yondan

At the front of the dojo sits the Kamiza, a place where the Kami can reside. “Spirits of the Dojo.” One item in particular on the Kamidana is the Shinkyo (a round mirror). Somebody once told me that the more you train and progress, the closer you will move to the Shinkyo, enabling you to see your reflection more clearly. In my earlier years, this was a brilliant concept that encapsulated the journey of becoming more self-aware. The years have rolled by and I find myself entering the beginning of Yondan. The reflection has changed and even with my aging eyes, I can make out more of my imperfections and bad habits. Humbled by this, I adjust my view and look closer. No longer focusing on my reflection, I see that behind me sit the many people I have met and trained with. All of whom have shaped and guided me. I am so very grateful.

I look forward to the training ahead of me with a new humility and a whole heart.

Thank you.

John
